The Goals of Cosmetic Nasal Surgery
Cosmetic rhinoplasty, commonly referred to as a nose job, is a surgical procedure that enhances the natural appearance of the nose. Choosing this procedure is not about completely changing how your nose and face look. Instead, we bring out the best of your features and help you gain confidence in how you look and present yourself to the world. A rhinoplasty is more than just changing your appearance; it’s an enhancement of yourself and your self-image that can help make everyday life happier.
Not only will a rhinoplasty heighten your natural appearance, the procedure can improve the function of your nose, boosting sleep quality, reducing snoring, easing breathing problems and improving structure. While the focus can be on enhancing your appearance, the invisible benefits of a rhinoplasty will also improve your daily life.
Common Aesthetic Concerns
There are an infinite number of reasons that you may want to alter the appearance of your nose, but a few of the most frequent include:
- Dorsal Hump and Profile Management — smoothing out the profile of the nose from the top to tip to eliminate a raised hump caused by uneven cartilage and bone placement
- Nasal Tip: Refinement and Definition — balancing the appearance of the nose by altering the tip
- Bulbous Tip — reshaping the nose tip by reducing the cartilage that causes a rounded or wide shape
- Boxy Tip — narrowing the nose tip to create a more streamlined triangular structure
- Plunging or Droopy Tip — lifting the end of the nose to fix a downward drop or sagging appearance
- Wide Nose — narrowing all parts of the nose that are wider than proportional to other facial features

The Recovery Timeline for Cosmetic Rhinoplasty
Rhinoplasty does require time and care to achieve full recovery. Here’s what you can expect as you go through the recovery process:
- Days 1–3: Maximum swelling, congestion, mild oozing. Nasal packing may be present
- Days 4–7: Bruising peaks and begins to yellow. Splint removal typically occurs around day seven
- Weeks 2–3: Visible bruising fades. “Social downtime” ends for most office workers
- Weeks 4–6: Bones are stable, 70-80% of swelling has resolved
- Months 3–12: Final tip definition emerges. Numbness resolves
Recovery will be different for each individual, but it is important to prioritize rest and take care of yourself. Since we are in Minnesota, it is crucial that you keep your nose humidified and protected from the cold in the winter. You also must protect your nose from the sun in the summer months. Nasal hydration is also important, so keep saline spray on hand.
Frequently Asked Questions
Yes! While there are some challenges with thicker skin, including more swelling and the possibility for slightly reduced definition, you will also scar less and have more options for grafting.
While not common, it is possible that your voice will undergo a subtle change after rhinoplasty.
Recovery is unique to each individual, but most see the full results after about a year. For those with thicker skin, that time could be slightly longer.
Absolutely. In fact, many people prefer to do multiple procedures at once to avoid waiting for a full recovery before undertaking another surgery.
Roughly 10-15% of patients go back for rhinoplasty revision, so while uncommon, it does happen. At Renew, we go through a thorough and thoughtful pre-op planning process to help avoid the need for further surgery.
